Best ways to organize your skincare when traveling
Years ago, when I was a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant), which by the way, was one of the hardest/thankless/underpaid/greatly rewarding jobs I ever had. (I digress). I had a patient that was in his 80s and was a very outspoken older man in the waning years of his life and was in the hospital and wasn’t likely going to leave alive. We’ll call him Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith said “Come here Joe. I’ve got some advice for you.” I walked in the room. I was always interested in advice for people whom have been around far longer and seen much more stuff than I had at that point. He said “Joe, promise me something. Travel when you’re young. When you get to my age, I can’t walk with this damn hip, can’t see crap. It sucks. I have all the time and the money but now I can’t even enjoy traveling.” At first, I laughed and said no problem Mr. Smith, I’ll travel. Hehehe. But little did I know Mr. Smith planted a mind ninja. Who has stayed there ever since.
I have done my best by Mr. Smith and tried to travel (within reason and budget) as much as I can. However, one aspect that I have gotten used to speaking about as a dermatologic care provider is talking about skincare and traveling. I see it come up quite a bit. Huge rashes from using some product while on vacation. Cutting some trips short or having to visit a doctor while on vacation because they got an allergic reaction from that “great smelling soap” at the hotel. I understand the importance of taking care of one’s skin, especially when traveling. My advice is always the same. Bring your own crap, use your own crap. Your skin knows what it likes. The last thing you want is to arrive at your destination with a breakout or dry, irritated skin. That’s why it’s crucial to pack your skincare products correctly and organize them efficiently.
Here are the 5 Rules for Skincare When Traveling:
- Keep it simple:
– Stick to the holy triad of skincare. Moisturizer, Sunscreen, Cleanser (face or body). When it comes to traveling with skincare, less is more. Stick to the essentials, but don’t forget any necessary treatments for your specific skin concerns.
Joe Skin Says:
Get a combination shampoo, cleanser (face & body). That is one product. Then a combination moisturizer/sunscreen. That is one product. Now you have only two things to carry. Instead of 4. I didn’t take common core math, but I’m pretty sure 4 is still more than 2. - Use travel-sized containers:
– To save space and weight, transfer your skincare products into travel-sized containers. This way, you won’t have to lug around full-sized bottles and risk them spilling or breaking. But don’t forget to mark them with a Sharpie. Unless you mysteriously can tell the difference between white moisturizer and white sunscreen just by looking.
Joe Skin Says:
Go to your local Target or Grocery Store (King Soopers here in Colorado) and they have a travel section where you can buy travel size that is already size specified for flights. - Pack strategically:
– Place your skincare products in a separate, clear plastic bag, so they are easy to find and don’t get lost among your other items. Also, consider packing them in a hard-shell case to protect them from any potential damage during transit. The last thing you need is to open your luggage to find that it looks like your products went through a mosh pit and you have moisturizer or shampoo. LITERALLY EVERYWHERE!!! - Consider the weather:
– Depending on where you’re traveling, you may need to adjust your skincare routine. If you’re going to a hot and humid destination, you might want to pack oil-free products that won’t clog your pores. Conversely, if you’re heading to a cold, dry location, you may want to pack heavier moisturizers to combat the dry air. Be the boy scout. “Be prepared.” And look at the weather before you get there. - Don’t forget the basics:
– While it’s essential to pack your skincare products, don’t forget the basics of skincare. Make sure to drink plenty of water, get enough sleep, and avoid excessive alcohol consumption to keep your skin looking healthy and refreshed. (Unless you are going on a men’s trip or going to Vegas… do your best! I understand.)
Traveling can be stressful, but taking care of your skin shouldn’t be. By keeping it simple, using travel-sized containers, packing strategically, considering the weather, and not forgetting the basics, you can maintain your skincare routine and arrive at your destination looking and feeling your best. Mr. Smith would be proud of you! Until next time, get SOM!
